CIF vs EXW: What’s the Difference and Which One Is Right for You?

Posted by Edwin Hutagaol on

When buying export cars from countries like Singapore, you’ll often come across two common international trade terms: CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) and EXW (Ex-Works). These are part of Incoterms, which define the responsibilities and costs between sellers and buyers in international shipping.

Understanding the difference between CIF and EXW is crucial to making the best purchasing decision and avoiding unexpected costs.

What Is CIF?

CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) means the price of the vehicle includes:

  • Shipping costs to your destination port,

  • Insurance coverage during shipping,

  • Loading charges at the port of origin.

In this case, the seller handles most of the logistics, and the vehicle is shipped directly to the buyer’s destination port.

Pros of CIF:

  • Convenient and hassle-free for the buyer.

  • The seller bears the risk until the car reaches the destination port.

Cons of CIF:

  • Generally higher total cost.

  • Buyer has little control over the shipping and insurance providers.

  • Unexpected destination port fees may apply.

What Is EXW?

EXW (Ex-Works) is the opposite of CIF. The seller only makes the car available at their location (e.g., showroom or warehouse in Singapore), and the buyer is responsible for all logistics, including inland transport, export handling, shipping, and insurance.

Pros of EXW:

  • Lower vehicle prices compared to CIF.

  • More flexibility — buyers can choose their own shipping and insurance providers.

Cons of EXW:

  • More complex process.

  • Buyer takes full responsibility and risk during transport.

  • Requires knowledge of export regulations and logistics.

Which One Should You Choose?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — it depends on:

  • Your level of experience with exports,

  • Your logistics setup,

  • Whether you prioritize cost savings or convenience.

If you’re new to importing vehicles, CIF may offer peace of mind. But if you're experienced or have a trusted logistics partner, EXW might help you reduce costs significantly.

Planning to Import a Car?
